'Screams desperation': GOP strategist predicts 'era of MTG may finally be ending'

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) revealed a list of demands after meeting with House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) this week — but so far has managed to extract nothing from him.

The Georgia Republican told Steve Bannon's "War Room" podcast that she wanted Johnson to agree to no more aid for Ukraine and to cut funding for special counsel Jack Smith's investigations into Donald Trump. But the House speaker refused to negotiate with Greene – who is looking increasingly weak and desperate, according to Republican strategist and MSNBC columnist Susan Del Percio.

"Desperation is never a good look for a politician, and nothing screams desperation like Greene’s ongoing threats against Johnson," Del Percio wrote. "She knows her influence in the House is waning and that ally Trump simply doesn’t seem interested in backing her chaotic play."

Greene gained outsize influence due to her closeness to Trump, but the former president has little appetite for her leadership challenge to Johnson, who won his support during a recent visit to Mar-a-Lago, Del Percio wrote.

"The timing is just not good for Trump, and his campaign team knows it," she wrote. "In Trumpland, chaos is tolerated only when Trump himself is the cause. And Greene’s weeks of grandstanding have infuriated some in Trump’s inner circle."

Without Trump's support, Greene has lost her other allies in the Republican Party, which leaves her on the sidelines instead of her preferred role as the center of attention.

"Should Trump win, don’t expect to see Greene in a key role," Del Percio wrote. "I predict this saga will push her even further to the fringe, a gadfly and a caricature ... It seems pretty much everyone is done with Marjorie Taylor Greene. She may keep her seat in Congress, but the era of MTG may finally be ending. And with it, any need for us to pay the slightest bit of attention to what she has to say."
