'90%': Striker with 23 Premier League goals says he once came so close to joining Tottenham

A striker with 23 Premier League goals has now revealed he came incredibly close to joining Tottenham.

Spurs haven’t really been in the market for a striker across several years now, due to the remarkable consistency of Harry Kane before his move to Bayern Munich in 2023, and the unerring efficiency of Heung-min Son.

However – before the England international took the Premier League by storm – there was one forward who Tottenham made a couple of bids for…

Saido Berahino opens up on failed Tottenham move

After Saido Berahino scored 20 goals in 45 appearances at the age of just 21 back in the 2014/15 campaign, Spurs were understandably eager to secure his signature.

The Guardian claim that Tottenham made an £18m bid, before offering £22m after that proposal was rejected.

Berahino even attempted to force the move himself by going on strike, taking to Twitter to write: “Sad how I can’t say exactly how the club has treated me but I can officially say I will never play.”

Now, after he was asked just how close a move to Tottenham was, the Burundi international has responded.

Berahino simply wrote “90percent” in response to the question.

In total, Berahino scored 23 Premier League goals for the Baggies, but saw his career fizzle out after this tense transfer saga.

The 30-year-old is now playing his football in Cyprus with AEL Limassol.

Spurs now want another striker

As aforesaid, Kane’s incredible goalscoring feats meant Spurs never really needed to sign a top striker, although Ange Postecoglou is now considering a move for one of England’s best.

A story from Give Me Sport claims that Tottenham could make a bid for Brentford No.17 Ivan Toney this summer, as the north Londoners aim to sign a proper No.9 to help bring their wide forwards into play, like Son and Brennan Johnson.

The Bees want £60m to sell the England international, although Spurs are said to be considering a £45m offer to open the bidding – be sure to keep an eye on that situation heading into the summer transfer window.
