Manchester United must avoid selling goalscorer to rival, decision could haunt club for years

This summer, the exit of Mason Greenwood from Manchester United looks likely, but the club must avoid making one crucial error.

Mason Greenwood has been tearing up La Liga for much of this season after making his loan to Getafe last summer.

For Manchester United, this was the best possible scenario from the loan as the forward has played his way into the minds of several top European clubs.

This sees a lot of interest for the Englishman in the up-and-coming transfer window from some of the biggest clubs in the continent.

But if Greenwood is sold, there is one place that Jason Wilcox must avoid letting him go to as United would regret it for years.

Mason Greenwood now linked to Premier League rivals

It’s been reported on Wednesday that Greenwood is the subject of wide interest this coming summer, with no way back for the player at United.

Atletico Madrid are thought to be the favourites this summer as he is happy in the Spanish capital.

But according to The Telegraph, there are other clubs in Spain keen, along with German sides and Italian sides such as Lazio and Juventus.

But the real problem arises as it’s said there are also at least two Premier League clubs keen on Greenwood, for a fee of between £40-45m which United have decided on after seeing what Chelsea spent on Cole Palmer last summer.

Selling Greenwood to a league rival would be a terrible move, one which United would end up regretting for years to come.

Why Manchester United need to avoid selling to rivals

While, there aren’t many United fans who’d want to see Greenwood back in and amongst the squad at Carrington, it’s also hard to dispute that he’s doing well in Spain.

He’s found his feet again after his lengthy break from football due to legal battles.

So if United were to sell him to a Premier League club and he was excellent, it’d be a tough pill to swallow for many in a way which it wouldn’t be if he performed well elsewhere in Europe.

So to sell him to a rival isn’t a move we can see going down well at Old Trafford this summer as it could haunt the club.
