Former Arsenal wonderkid & 'warrior': 3 Corry Evans replacements Sunderland should now target - opinion

Sunderland are set to offload Corry Evans on a free transfer this summer.

Corry Evans was a regular in Sunderland’s first team after joining the club in 2021.

The club captain continued his role in the squad following promotion, but was eventually sidelined for over a year when he was forced off against Middlesbrough 2023.

The Black Cats’ poor form meant fans were eagerly awaiting Evans return to the side, when he eventually earned a cameo appearance in the defeat to Millwall last month.

Evans had initially signed a one-year extension to ensure he was still at the Academy of Light as he went through his recovery, but it was unclear whether it would be extended once again now that he is fit.

However, it looks like he will now be released at the end of his contract and is available to join another club for absolutely nothing.

Supporters were left concerned by Evans’ exit as he was one of the few older players left on Wearside.

While Sunderland‘s transfer plans are unclear, they will surely look to replace both the 33-year-old’s ability and experience.

Here are three players the Black Cats could sign to replace Evans.

Krystian Bielik

Krystian Bielik was once very highly-rated, having signed for Arsenal for £2.4 million at only 17 years old.

The midfielder’s career in the Premier League never really took off, and he has since spent a majority of his career in the second tier.

Bielik enjoyed great success with Derby County, but their relegation urged him to leave the club and join Birmingham City, signing a permanent deal last summer.

The Poland international made 36 appearances this season, making the most interceptions in the squad (59) and has won the most headers (94).

With Birmingham now relegated, Bielik could once again look to return to the Championship.

Lewis Travis

Lewis Travis was previously a very important player for Blackburn Rovers, having been appointed club captain in 2022.

However, the midfielder fell out of favour under Jon Dahl Tomasson and eventually decided to join Ipswich Town in search of more game-time.

Travis only managed nine appearances for the Tractor Boys, but their promotion-winning campaign unsurprisingly made it hard to force his way in.

Blackburn are likely to be eager to give the 26-year-old ‘warrior‘ another shot, but could also receive interest in his signature.

Han-Noah Massengo

Han-Noah Massengo proved to be an exciting player for Bristol City as he became a regular in their first team as a teenager.

The midfielder eventually turned down a new contract though, and went onto join Burnley on a free transfer last summer.

Massengo has been given very few chances in the Premier League though, making only three appearances.

The 22-year-old could look to go elsewhere for more regular football, though his future may depend on whether Burnley are relegated.
