Fired postal worker broke in 5 times to steal mail, feds say

A fired postal worker accused of burglarizing a Hudson County post office five times last year was arrested Wednesday, officials said.

Zyeama Johnson, 29, of Jersey City, allegedly broke into the post office on Jan. 10, 13, 21, 26, and again Feb. 3, 2023. Each time, authorities alleged she stole mail from the location and loaded it into a black Chrysler Voyager with Florida license plates before driving off, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office District of New Jersey.

Johnson had been terminated for her job at the location but federal prosecutors did not say why she was fired.

On Feb. 7, 2023, Johnson broke into a second post office location and was arrested by law enforcement as she left the building, the office said.

She told police she was retrieving a tax document from the building but it was later revealed that no such document existed at that location, according to a criminal complaint.

Police found 38 debit and credit cards that were in the names of 36 people, inside her car, the complaint stated.

A search of one of her mobile devices showed that she had messaged another person attempting to sell credit cards for approximately $50 to $300 per card, according to the complaint. She had also attempted to sell a bank statement, authorities alleged.

Following an investigation, Johnson was arrested Wednesday and charged with six counts of burglary of a post office, the office said. She appeared in Newark federal court and was released on $100,000 unsecured bond.
