'Understand...': Sheffield Wednesday 'very interested' in signing 7-goal striker this summer - journalist

Sheffield Wednesday have set their sights on yet another possible summer signing.

Sheffield Wednesday are wasting no time in preparing themselves for the 2024/25 season, following their dramatic end to the 2023/24 campaign.

The Owls ensured their Championship safety and have now set their sights on a new deal for manager Danny Rohl, as well as reportedly making improvements to the Middlewood training ground.

And Sheffield Wednesday are also starting on their summer transfer plans with reports stating that the Owls want to re-sign James Beadle on loan from Brighton and Ian Poveda ahead of his Leeds United contract expiring.

Rohl is now reportedly keen on re-signing loan striker Ike Ugbo as well, with his parent club Troyes on the brink of relegation from the French Ligue 2.

Sheffield Wednesday eyeing Ike Ugbo transfer

Journalist Joe Crann has revealed on X that Sheffield Wednesday are keen on signing Ugbo on a permanent transfer this summer.

The Canadian international joined on loan from Troyes in January and went on to score seven goals in 18 Championship outings for the Owls, finishing the season on 11 Championship goals after scoring four on loan at Cardiff in the first half of the campaign.

He became an instant fan favourite at Hillsborough with his goals playing a huge role in the club’s eventual 20th place finish.

The key factor behind potential Sheffield Wednesday swoop for Ike Ugbo

Matters with Ugbo’s parent club Troyes aren’t so great right now. Their last match was abandoned due to fan trouble following a catastrophic season in Ligue 2, with Troyes relegated from Ligue 1 just last season.

Troyes now have two games left to play and a six-point gap to safety to make up, and what happens with that game remains to be seen, but Troyes have since suspended four players over the matter.

So for Ugbo, returning to Troyes and playing third tier football in France next season may not be on his agenda, and fairly so after his impressive stint in England.

And Troyes may well feel that now is the perfect time to cash in on Ugbo with his stock high and the club no doubt in need of some capital amid their struggles.

But Sheffield Wednesday will need to wait for Troyes season to finish before they can realistically make a move for Ugbo, and even then, whether or not the Owls have the money to make a move happen remains to be seen.

There’s the fear of other clubs coming in and putting money on the table for Ugbo before Sheffield Wednesday even have a chance to make their bid.

But Ugbo has enjoyed one of his best career spells with Sheffield Wednesday and so the Owls might have the first say on what happens next for the 25-year-old.
