‘In the background’: Newcastle have privately spoken about signing Arsenal’s ‘fantastic’ player – journalist

Newcastle United are always an interesting team to watch in the transfer window.

As the richest club in the world, the Magpies always have the ability to spring a surprise or two in the transfer window.

Newcastle will be set for a pretty exciting summer by the sounds of things, and, according to Craig Hope, speaking on his YouTube channel, there have been some early discussions about potentially signing Aaron Ramsdale from Arsenal.

Newcastle have spoken about signing Aaron Ramsdale

Hope spoke about Arsenal’s ‘fantastic’ goalkeeper and Newcastle’s interest.

“They’re looking at goalkeepers. Aaron Ramsdale is a player Eddie Howe knows well. I think preliminary talks, conversations, nothing formal have taken place in the background, but I don’t think that’s a priority heading into the summer. But if things fell in a certain way elsewhere, is that something they would look at? Absolutely yes,” Hope said.

Is Aaron Ramsdale better than Nick Pope?

This would be an intriguing signing if Newcastle were to press ahead.

The Magpies have had goalkeeping issues this season as Martin Dubravka has struggled at times, but when Nick Pope is fit, he’s genuinely one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

There’s a real argument to make that Ramsdale wouldn’t actually be an upgrade on Pope.

That said, it’s not clear how Pope will get on upon his return from injury, but if he can hit the heights he showed during last season, then Ramsdale would probably struggle to get into this Newcastle team.

Of course, if Pope does return and look rusty, Newcastle would be justified in their decision to target a goalkeeper like Ramsdale, but, for the Arsenal ace, he has to weigh up whether it’s worth taking the punt and joining a club where there’s a chance he’ll, once again, find himself playing second-fiddle.
