Why Arsenal fans are now even more worried heading into the Manchester United clash

Manchester United vs Arsenal is always a spectacle, but this time there is so much on the line. For Mikel Arteta’s side, that is.

For the first time since the 2003/04 season, Arsenal have a real shot at winning the Premier League title. It’s now a two-horse race in England’s top flight, with Arteta battling it out with former colleague Pep Guardiola for the title.

Manchester United fans will secretly be rooting for the Gunners in the grand scheme. If City were to prevail again, that would mean a record four Premier League titles in a row for the Cityzen’s. But, United will still want to win against Arsenal. They’re looking to secure a European slot, so it’s quite the predicament.

The result will have huge implications on the title race, and here’s why Arsenal fans are now even more worried heading into the encounter.

Who is the referee for Manchester United vs Arsenal?

Paul Tierney has now been confirmed as the match official for the game. He has the task of taking charge of one of the most important games in the Premier League 23/24 calendar. Tierney is also backed up by the following officials:

  • Assistants: Scott Ledger, Mat Wilkes
  • Fourth official: Darren Bond
  • VAR: John Brooks
  • Assistant VAR: Constantine Hatzidakis.

So why are Arsenal fans furious about this?

Why Arsenal fans are worried about this

Tierney was the referee in the same fixture last season, which saw Arsenal lose 3-1, thanks to a debut strike from Antony and a Marcus Rashford double.

However, Gabriel Martinelli had a goal wrongly disallowed, for which an apology was later issued, as the referee and VAR team claimed Martin Odegaard had fouled Christian Eriksen in the build-up.

They believe that history could now repeat itself, with a monumental error made against them which will have even harsher implications this time: potentially costing them the Premier League title.

In a must-win game, it’s a big worry for the Gunners, but a plus for Manchester United. Will any controversial decisions take place on Sunday?
