End of double downhills as FIS publishes alpine skiing calendar

The raft of injuries seen in the last Alpine skiing World Cup season has led to organizers restructuring the calendar to avoid back-to-back downhills on race weekends.

World skiing body the FIS published 2024-25 calendars on Thursday after its spring committee meetings in Slovenia.

"The calendar will be woven with some returning competition venues, with venues making their grand debut, and not forgetting the venerable traditions that thrill us every year," an FIS statement said.

The opening World Cup weekend will take place in Sölden, Austria as usual on the last weekend of October, despite worries that climate change makes it less likely that racing can be held.

The highlight of the season will be the World Championships in Austria's Saalbach-Hinterglemm from February 4-16.

Attention soon after will shift to Switzerland's Crans-Montana, where the next World Championships are being held in 2027. The male speed skiers will test the "as-yet-unknown" men’s slope as part of the World Cup.

Another novelty on the men’s side is a new venue in Norway on the last weekend before the finals. Hafjell will host technical races.

The World Cup finals, hosted by Sun Valley in the US, are March 22-27.
