'Genuinely chuffed': Journalist hails former Sheffield Wednesday ace who has achieved something 'great'

Massimo Luongo has received high praise two years on from his Sheffield Wednesday exit.

Massimo Luongo joined Sheffield Wednesday from QPR in 2019 and made only 17 starts in his first season, before his injury record only got worse.

The midfielder was sidelined on three separate occasions in his second campaign, including missing out on the final three months and making only 13 appearances in total.

He went onto make only one appearance in the first three months of the 2021/22 campaign, before managing to stay fit for a majority of the second half of the season as they reached the play-offs.

Luongo picked up five assists and was named January’s Player of the Month, as well as appearing in two EFL’s Team of the Week.

However, he went onto reject a new contract and left the club to join Middlesbrough in 2022.

Things didn’t really pick up for him then either, lasting only four months at the Riverside Stadium before his contract was cancelled, having not made an appearance.

Luongo then joined Ipswich Town on a free transfer and has since found much more success, making 43 appearances this season and playing a key role in them winning back-to-back promotions to the Premier League.

Massimo Luongo is a ‘lovely bloke’

The Star journalist Joe Crann was eager to praise the 31-year-old, whose story has turned out ‘great’ after a tough few years.

He wrote on X: “Genuinely chuffed for Massimo Luongo… Was such a lovely bloke to interview. Couldn’t catch a break with us, dealt with so many injuries, had a rough spell at Boro – now he’s fit every week and a Premier League footballer. Great story.”

His story should give Sheffield Wednesday hope

Massimo Luongo was always an undeniable talent, but it was hard to get the best out of him when he was always on the treatment table.

He has had much better luck at Ipswich though and he has become a player that Sheffield Wednesday and many other clubs would really appreciate among their ranks.

Luongo and Ipswich’s move from League One to the top flight is inspirational though and is one that the Owls should definitely take great hope from.

Their success would certainly have been something to be jealous about if Wednesday were relegated, but if they can keep Danny Rohl then there is no reason why they can’t be the next shocker at the top of the Championship.
