'A good game of football': Paul Merson now makes score prediction for Wolves v Crystal Palace

Pundit Paul Merson has now made his score prediction for Wolves against Crystal Palace at Molineux on Saturday.

Gary O’Neil watched his side get put to the sword last weekend by Manchester City, and is looking for a response against the Eagles in the final home game of the season.

Wanderers currently sit on 46 points, and there is potential to finish as high as ninth if results go the right way.

But Wolves could also finish as low down as 14th.

There was a time a couple of months ago when it looked like Wolves could challenge for European football. But ultimately, the size of the squad just made things too difficult. Wolves have also been very unlucky with VAR decisions.

But O’Neil will be determined to finish the season as strongly as possible, and the game against Palace is an opportunity…

While there is a chance for three points here, this also has the potential to be a difficult game for Wolves.

After parting ways with Roy Hodgson, Palace have really improved under their new manager Oliver Glasner, and have some very big threats in their team.

Michael Olise, Ebere Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta have all looked brilliant under the Austrian, and Wolves’ defence will be tested.

Max Kilman will be hoping for a better outing after struggling against Erling Haaland, and he has the chance to make a bit of a statement against the physical Mateta.

With both teams safe from relegation and having the chance to play with freedom, Paul Merson is expecting a lively contest. However, he is sitting on the fence with his score prediction.

Predicting a 2-2 draw, he told Sportskeeda: “Wolves have had bad injuries this season and have fizzled out in recent months. That said, I don’t want their season to finish on a low, which would lead their fans to forget all the good work they did before the turn of the year.

“Crystal Palace were absolutely outstanding against Manchester United and emphatically put them to the sword last weekend. Eberechi Eze has an outside chance of making it into Gareth Southgate’s squad for
Euro 2024 – he can be England’s x factor.

“This will be a good game of football and both teams will look to play on the front foot, so I can see a lot of goals being scored.”

Still plenty to play for for Wolves

European football may no longer be achievable, but there are still six points to play for for Wolves, and a top-half finish is possible. That would be an amazing feat after all the chaos of last summer, and probably no less than O’Neil actually deserves.

It’s a difficult last couple of games. Palace look completely rejuvenated under Glasner, and the Liverpool players will be determined to send Jurgen Klopp off in style at Anfield.

But Wolves have been upset odds several times this season and should be targeting six points to finish.

Wanderers tend not to finish very well in the Premier League so hopefully it can be a bit different this time.
