G7 justice ministers discuss illegal drugs, use of AI in Venice

Justice ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized democracies have discussed the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by judicial authorities in a legally acceptable way during a two-day conference held in Venice.

A theme of the conference, held on Thursday and Friday, was how to set limits to the use of machine learning and robotics. Italy currently has the G7 presidency.

In a posting on the X messaging service on Friday, Italian Justice Minister Carlo Nordio described the main topic as the "Fight against Transnational Organized Crime, with a focus on Drug Trafficking and Laundering of Crime Proceeds."

Apart from Italy, the G7 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. European Union representatives also attended the meeting.

Based on an Italian initiative, the G7 leaders adopted a joint resolution at the end of last month on combating the international trade in illegal drugs.

Synthetic drugs, such as fentanyl, were a particular focus of that declaration,

The G7 is to set up permanent consultation between justice ministers.

G7 justice ministers met in Berlin in 2022 and in Tokyo in 2023 to hold talks on war crimes committed following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Ukrainian Justice Minister Denys Maliuska and Prosecutor-General Andriy Kostin participated in some of the discussions in Venice and also held bilateral meetings with G7 representatives.
