G7 justice ministers address illegal drugs, use of AI in Venice

Justice ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized democracies discussed the responsible use of artificial intelligence by judicial authorities during a two-day conference held in Venice.

A theme of the conference, held on Thursday and Friday, was how to set limits to the use of machine learning and robotics. Italy currently has the G7 presidency.

The joint statement released at the end of the meeting on Friday also emphasized the need for strict enforcement of sanctions and other measures against Russia, "including by holding accountable those who provide illicit financing and goods to Russia in violation of such measures."

The declaration from the justice ministers also touched on international efforts to fight organized crime, drug trafficking and money laundering as well as migrant smuggling.

Apart from Italy, the G7 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. European Union representatives also attended the meeting.

Based on an Italian initiative, the G7 leaders adopted a joint resolution at the end of last month on combating the international trade in illegal drugs.

Synthetic drugs, such as fentanyl, were a particular focus of that declaration,

The G7 is to set up permanent consultation between justice ministers.

G7 justice ministers met in Berlin in 2022 and in Tokyo in 2023 to hold talks on war crimes committed following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Ukrainian Justice Minister Denys Maliuska and Prosecutor-General Andriy Kostin participated in some of the discussions in Venice and also held bilateral meetings with G7 representatives.

The G7 ministers met just weeks after the European Parliament gave the green light for stricter regulations in the European Union. According to the rules approved in March, AI systems are to be categorized into different risk groups in future. The higher the potential risks of an application, the stricter the requirements should be.
