Slovak borovička receives protected status from European Commission

The European Commission on Wednesday, May 8, added Trenčianska borovička ‘JUNIPERUS', a spirit drink from Slovakia, to the register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI).

The EC described the product as a clear, colourless spirit drink with an alcohol content of 42 percent by volume, a pronounced aroma and the intense taste imparted of common and prickly juniper.

The citation states that the liquor – which is broadly similar to gin – is produced from matured juniper berry distillate, refined neutral spirit, and liquid sugar. The key component that imparts the spirit with its specific characteristics and unique character is the juniper berry distillate.

The aged juniper berry distillate is produced by two-stage distillation from the berries of common juniper (Juniperus communis) and prickly juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus), using only ripe berries without any rot or unripe berries.

"It is a colourless and slightly viscous liquid with a subtle sweetness, a spicy taste that is felt after consumption, with the aroma of juniper berries and a delicate oiliness," the European Commission description states.

The EC statement remarked that production of the spirit takes place in the city of Trenčín and that it has been on the market for over a hundred years thanks to its renowned quality, characteristic taste, and respect for traditional production processes. According to EC information, this new designation will be added to the existing list of 1910 protected wines and spirits from EU member countries.
