‘He knows’: Pep Guardiola shares his reaction to Rodri snub in Player of the Season award nominations

Pep Guardiola has shared his reaction to Rodri not being nominated for the Premier League Player of the Season award.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Erling Haaland and Phil Foden were the two Manchester City representatives nominated for the award.

The other nominees include Ollie Watkins, Cole Palmer, Alexander Isak, Virgil van Dijk, Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.

With Rodri not being a contender for the award, the City manager has shared his thoughts on the situation and what he thinks about the midfielder.

Speaking in his latest press conference ahead of City’s away match against Fulham, Guardiola had this to say on the matter when asked about Rodri’s snub.

He said: “Many deserve to be winners of trophies. The list is huge and everyone on it is important.

“He knows what we think about his importance and how magnificent and extraordinary a player he is. He shouldn’t be worried about that at all.

“When I started these awards didn’t exist. All the nominees are more than well deserved. They all played really good, otherwise, we would not be here.”

Rodri has been influential for City this season

In 31 Premier League appearances this season, the 27-year-old has made more passes into the final third of the pitch (346) than any other player in the division.

As well as that, the defensive-midfielder has racked up the fourth-highest number of goal-creating actions (23) in the league, more than the likes of Bukayo Saka (21), Mohamed Salah (19) and Bruno Fernandes (18) among others.

Then from a defensive point of view, Rodri has the highest combined total of tackles and interceptions (87) in the City squad.

His overall performances have earned the Spaniard a season rating of 7.62/10, making him the second-highest-rated player in the Premier League.

With all of that in mind, it’s baffling that Rodri has not been recognised for this individual award.
