Brother of Peru's president arrested in government corruption probe

The brother of Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has been arrested as part of a corruption investigation.

Nicanor Boluarte is accused of influence peddling and forming a criminal organization, judicial authorities announced on Friday.

A total of eight suspects were arrested, including President Boluarte's lawyer.

Just days ago, the government had disbanded a special police unit that was supporting prosecutors in their investigations into the president's inner circle.

Nicanor Boluarte is said to have provided close allies with state appointments. In return, investigators believe they provided money and signatures to register the Citizens for Peru party. The new party was apparently intended to serve the interests of the president.

Former vice president Dina Boluarte came to power at the end of 2022 after previous president Pedro Castillo was arrested on charges of an attempted coup d'état following a showdown with Congress.

Most recently, Dina Boluarte was questioned by prosecutors on suspicion of of illicit enrichment.
