'Keen to come back': £34m striker wants Premier League return, Newcastle know he's available - journalist

Newcastle United could have a chance this summer to sign a striker who they have wanted for a long time.

That may depend on outgoings at St James’ Park, with both Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson being linked with moves away.

The former is a target for Arsenal, but it seems incredibly unlikely that they will be able to afford the Magpies’ most expensive signing ever. Newcastle United do not want to sell him, nor does Isak want to leave.

As for Wilson, his future is not as clear. He almost left the club in January, and there have since been suggestions that he could be sold this summer as he heads into the final year of his contract. But Eddie Howe is keen to keep the number nine, and has made it clear to the owners that replacing Wilson could be very costly.

But if Newcastle do decide sell Wilson and move for a replacement, one possible option is Roma forward Tammy Abraham.

That is according to TBR Football insider Graeme Bailey, who has told Geordie Boot Boys that Newcastle United have been informed that the 26-year-old could be on the market this summer.

“He [Tammy Abraham] is keen to come back to England,” he said.

“He’s an interesting option and a few clubs have been made aware of his availability – Newcastle United are one of them.”

Why Tammy Abraham could be a good option for Newcastle United

Having left Chelsea to join Roma for £34million in 2021, Abraham is ready to return to England.

That could present Newcastle with an opportunity, and they are certainly long-term admirers of the striker. The Magpies wanted him on loan back in the day, but Abraham was actually instructed to sign for Swansea City instead.

There have since been other rumours about Newcastle wanting to sign him, and Bailey believes that Abraham could be a good option for Eddie Howe if Wilson does leave this summer.

“Newcastle want to keep Isak, and they need to. I think Callum Wilson might go, and then there’s a space in their squad for another striker. Tammy Abraham is still very young and similar to Isak – if you want a like for like, I think he’s pretty close.

“It’s a tough one [signing a backup striker]. It was always the issue that Tottenham Hotspur had with Harry Kane – they were always trying to sign a number two striker.

“But with Isak, they could sell it that he often plays off the left for Newcastle, which would allow Abraham to play centrally. In some games that could happen, so it might not be as big an issue for Newcastle.”
