'Not a chance': Troy Deeney stunned by what he's been hearing about Tottenham now

Tottenham Hotspur are set for a busy end to the Premier League season with three games in the following eight days.

Spurs host struggling Burnley on Saturday before welcoming title-chasing Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday night.

Ange Postecoglou’s charges then see out the season with a trip to already-relegated Sheffield United next Sunday.

Tottenham’s meeting with Man City will be in the spotlight, as it will have a big say on who could be lifting the title this season.

Pep Guardiola’s charges have a game in hand on Arsenal, so Gunners fans will be hoping their bitter rivals can do them a favour on the night.

This has led to some Spurs fans seemingly suggesting they wouldn’t mind their team losing against City, so as to deal Arsenal a huge blow in the title race.

Troy Deeney, writing in The Sun, has spoken about this “weird take” from certain Tottenham supporters.

What has Troy Deeney said about Tottenham v Man City and Arsenal title hopes?

Deeney wrote: “I know a few Tottenham fans who have told me they would love to see Ange Postecoglou put the kids out to face Manchester City on Tuesday night, so Arsenal can’t win the league.

“I have to be honest – it’s a ******* weird take. You hate another team so much that you want City to win it, again? Not a chance.

“I’m getting to a point where, as a football fan, I want a different team to win the league. Not because City are terrible but it just gets boring.

“We want to see the likes of City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and, hopefully, Spurs all pushing and competing until the final ebbs of the season.

“I want to be sat there thinking, ‘Blimey, who’s going to win the league?’ rather than, ‘This is a done deal, it’s City, roll on the summer’ because it becomes a waste of time.

“So, here we go: Tottenham should want to help Arsenal win the title by getting a result against City.

“It will give themselves and everyone else hope that they can win it one day.”

Tottenham are in a tricky position but professionalism will prevail

Deeney’s comments suggesting Tottenham should want to actively help Arsenal win the title probably won’t go down well among the Spurs fanbase.

One thing is beating Man City for their own purposes, which in their case would be cementing a Europa League spot and also claiming a huge scalp ahead of next season.

Spurs certainly won’t have Arsenal in mind during the game, and if they do win, you just know the banter from Gunners fans will be along the lines of ‘cheers for helping us win the title lads’.

It’s certainly a tricky position for Tottenham to be in, but the players are professionals at the top of their game and there’s still a lot to play for, so they certainly won’t be taking their foot off the gas against City.
