Jurgen Klopp reveals biggest regret of final season in charge of Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted his disappointment towards the limited minutes he handed to Harvey Elliott across his final season in charge at Anfield.

Despite having nothing else to strive for beyond a third-place finish, or if they are fortunate with results, a potential second-place finish in the Premier League, Liverpool delivered an impassioned display against Tottenham last weekend, securing a 4-2 victory at Anfield which was led by a star showing from Elliott.

Despite starting in 18 of Liverpool's 20 cup matches this season, this game against Spurs marked only Elliott's ninth start in the top flight, and Klopp has confessed he should have found more opportunities for the 21-year-old.

Speaking at a press conference, Klopp openly shared: "It's not like I go back and think, 'where did we go wrong here and there?', but if I regret one thing a little bit it's that Harvey didn't play often enough maybe.

"In a very important and intense period in January when we had a lot of injuries, he played really good, probably our best player whether it was right wing or right midfield, all these kind of things.

"Then everybody came back and he had a few minutes here and there and didn't start anymore and then came on and made a big impact. It's really nice that he could show that."

Liverpool are next in action on Monday night when they face an Aston Villa side determined to hold on to fourth place in the Premier League.

Klopp will need to tread carefully at Villa Park to avoid trouble with officials, as a yellow card would result in a touchline ban for his final game in charge at home to Wolves on Sunday.

Elliott, who has three goals and four assists in the Premier League to his name this season, will hope for another start and could retain his role in midfield, with Mohamed Salah once again expected to start on the right wing after his return to form last week.
