Poland has announced that it will continue to strengthen its eastern border. Warsaw will start building modern fortifications, states the Polish prime minister Donald Tusk.

During a meeting with the military near the eastern border, Tusk said that the Polish-Belarusian border is a unique place because of the pressure of illegal immigration.

"In fact, we are dealing with a progressive hybrid war. I want there to be no doubt about it - a country with increasingly aggressive intentions towards Poland, such as Belarus, is a co-organizer of this practice on the Polish border," the Polish Prime Minister said, emphasizing that there will be "no restrictions" when it comes to security.

At the same time, Tusk noted that the protection of the eastern border is an important matter not only for Poland but for the whole of Europe.

"We have begun intensive work on modern fortifications, and these fortifications will be built in many dimensions along the entire Polish border from the east. This is not only the internal border of Poland, but also the border of the EU. Therefore, I have no doubt that the whole of Europe will have to - and I know we will - invest in its security by investing in Poland's eastern border and the security of our border," he said.

Situation on the border of Belarus and Poland

Tensions between Poland and Belarus have been on the rise for a long time. The situation worsened significantly after the migration crisis when thousands of illegal migrants tried to break into Poland from Belarus.

Now Poland is stepping up border protection. Warsaw has built a fence on the border with Belarus. Warsaw also said it could cut off railroad communication with the neighboring country.

In addition, Poland has previously stated that it was going to build a new military unit 35 km from the border with Belarus.
