Tottenham player ratings v Burnley… Micky van de Ven saves the day with three 4/10 displays on show

Tottenham Hotspur sealed all three points against Burnley on Saturday to pull further clear of Newcastle United in fifth place.

Ange Postecoglou‘s men came into the game on the back of four straight defeats in the Premier League after a dismal month.

Spurs knew three points would be key if they were to push towards securing fifth spot with Newcastle United breathing down their necks.

And it was the same old story at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the visitors took the lead in the first half.

However, Burnley’s lead did not last too long with Pedro Porro netting his third of the campaign and his second of the season against against the Clarets.

Micky van de Ven came to the rescue once again for Spurs as he provided a finish which most the strikers in the Premier League would have been proud of.

It was not a performance that Tottenham can look back on as one of their best, but with three points in the bag, here are The Spurs News‘ player ratings…

Guglielmo Vicario – 6

There was little Guglielmo Vicario could have done with Jacob Bruun Larsen’s opener but he did make a bright stop in the first half to prevent any further damage.

No issues from set pieces today which was a positive to take in what was otherwise a fairly quiet game for the Italian.

Pedro Porro – 7

A real mixed afternoon in north London for the Spanish right-back who was at fault in the build-up to the opening goal of the game.

However, the 24-year-old did make up for his mistake with a fantastic goal which saw him grab his second of the campaign against Vincent Kompany’s side.

Aside from his busy first half, Porro did not offer much in the final third with his end product lacking when it came to providing crosses into the box.

Cristian Romero – 7

Just another typically solid display from Cristian Romero who has shown a consistent level of performance throughout the campaign.

It is no real surprise Postecoglou refuses to break up the partnership formed between the Argentine and his Dutch teammate as they have been so strong at the back.

Although Tottenham’s clean record is nothing short of horrendous, the centre-back pairing has remained looking strong as ever.

Micky van de Ven – 9

Awarded the Supporters’ Player of the Season before kick-off, Van de Ven maintained his fine first season in the Premier League.

Once again, Spurs were left looking to their centre-backs for some inspiration in attack and the Dutchman provided a stunning finish to seal the points.

Some of the forwards should take note of what the 23-year-old is doing going forward as he looks a real threat in the opposition’s box.

What a signing for Tottenham.

Oliver Skipp – 4

After coming on for Emerson Royal at left-back on Sunday against Liverpool, Oliver Skipp was given the nod by Postecoglou.

However, it was an experiment which did not really work out with the 23-year-old caught sleeping for the opening goal of the afternoon.

Skipp eventually saw his name taken by the referee as he endured a difficult afternoon on the left side of the defence.

Pape Matar Sarr – 6

The Tottenham midfield has been a real problem area in recent weeks for Postecoglou with the Australian unable to find his best combination.

Pape Matar Sarr made a bright start to the campaign but has struggled since the turn of the year to really cement his place in the starting XI.

He was granted the opportunity today but it was not exactly a performance to sing about as he found himself on the receiving end of a yellow card.

Yves Bissouma – 5

Another player who looks completely lost and void of any confidence is Yves Bissouma.

Performances just have not been there for the Mali midfielder since that red card he picked up away to Luton Town.

With Tottenham looking for a new midfielder in the summer, it has to be questioned whether it will be Bissouma who sees his spot at risk.

His place at the club may even come under question.

James Maddison – 6

An improved effort from James Maddison today. The midfielder may now even find himself fighting for his spot in the England squad this summer he has struggled that much recently.

However, there were signs that he was getting back to speed against Burnley today. The final pass and shot were not there, but the right ideas were on display.

By no means was this a statement performance from Maddison but it is one which he will hopefully build on.

Brennan Johnson – 4

Brennan Johnson had the opportunity to win it with just over 10 minutes remaining after an impressive cross from his captain.

The ball was put on a plate with no goalkeeper in sight and the Welshman somehow managed to put the ball wide.

Johnson has had some positive displays in a Spurs shirt this season, but anyone who watches the side week in and week out will tell you he has missed his fair share of close-range chances.

Heung-min Son – 4

Heung-min Son may have gotten his name on the scoresheet against Arsenal and Liverpool, but the Spurs captain is looking like a player who is completely sapped of energy.

The 31-year-old started through the middle with Richarlison injured once again, however, he does not look like an attacking threat at all currently.

Looked a lot more comfortable on the wing when Postecoglou made three changes with 15 minutes to go. He was robbed of an assist when Johnson squandered a chance from yards out.

Dejan Kulusevski – 5

The Swede certainly put in the effort in the second 45 minutes, but he is a player who looks shot of any confidence.

Dejan Kulusevski‘s game was cut short as youngster Dane Scarlett replaced him as he failed to provide any real threat down the flank.

It has been a season to forget for Kulusevski and he is just one of a number of players at Tottenham who need this campaign to come to an end.
