'I don't know what he's doing': Paul Merson blown away by what Tottenham defender did v Burnley today

Tottenham Hotspur have finally got back to winning ways in the Premier League as they ran out 2-1 winners over Burnley on Saturday.

Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs picked up their first win in five as they beat the Clarets at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, condemning them to relegation.

Burnley took the lead on 25 minutes as Sander Berge put Jacob Bruun Larsen through on goal. The 25-year-old took the ball into the box and fired past Guglielmo Vicario.

However, Tottenham equalised just after the half-hour mark, Pedro Porro getting the ball from Brennan Johnson and fired in at the near post from a tight angle.

Spurs finally got themselves in front in the 82nd minute as Micky van de Ven slotted into the bottom-left corner of the net after a great run from Dane Scarlett.

Paul Merson loved what he saw from the 22-year-old, telling Sky Sports News: “It’s an unbelievable by an outstanding defender. I don’t know what he is doing up there!”

Meanwhile, Sky Sports journalist Charlotte Marsh said: “It’s a goal Tottenham should have scored about 15 minutes ago, but the breakthrough has been coming all half.

“Van de Ven was already awarded close to 60 (could be an exaggeration) Player of the Year awards before the game, and the fan favourite comes up trumps again.

“He has been playing further forward in the last five minutes, and it pays off. For Burnley, relegation looms.”

Micky van de Ven has been a revelation for Tottenham

Van de Ven was declared Tottenham’s Player of the Season by the north Londoners’ official supporters’ clubs this week, and he is very much taking that quality right to the end of the season.

The £43million signing has been a revelation for Spurs, hitting the ground running in his maiden season, improving the defence massively, improving the team as a whole, and even chipping in at the other end.

Van de Ven’s efforts have boosted Tottenham’s hopes of making the top four. They’re now four points behind Aston Villa, with both teams having two games left to play.
