'Not this season': TalkSPORT pundit says £75m Liverpool man just isn't as good as two Arsenal players

Arsenal are going to finish above Liverpool this season and Tony Cascarino believes they have two players better than one Reds star this season.

Jurgen Klopp’s final season at Anfield has ended in a bit of a whimper. After initially looking on course to win everything, the Reds have to make do with just the League Cup.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom and with Arne Slot coming in, there’s reasons to be cheerful ahead of what promises to be a busy old summer.

Likewise, some players have continued to perform well all season and can hold their head very high.

One of those players is£75m defender, Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman has been a colossus once more, having to play alongside numerous partners at the back.

However, while Van Dijk has impressed and been put up for player of the season, TalkSPORT’s Tony Cascarino has said that Arsenal duo Gabriel and William Saliba have actually been better this term.

William Saliba and Gabriel better than Virgil van Dijk this season

Speaking on TalkSPORT about the recent player of the season nominations, Cascarino argued that Van Dijk was behind both Arsenal players.

“He was really good to a period for a time, but looking over the course of the season, I would certainly say Saliba and Gabriel were better. He didn’t play poorly, that’s for sure,” Cascarino said.

“I mean, look there were other seasons he has clearly warranted being the number one centre-half, but no, not this season.”

Who else is on the player of the year list with Van Dijk?

It’s been quite the year in the Premier League and a number of players have put in big performances really.

The list of eight nominees will all argue they deserve to be on there but it is quite amazing that Saliba and Gabriel miss out. That being said, Arsenal do have two nominees in Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka.

From there, the list is quite mixed.

Liverpool only have Virgil on there while Chelsea have Cole Palmer, and Aston Villa are represented with Ollie Watkins.

Manchester City, of course, have a say, as Erling Haaland and Phil Foden are included, while the final spot is taken by 20-goal Newcastle striker, Alexander Isak.

Van Dijk, then, is unlikely to come out on top. But once again, it shows just how good he has been for the Reds.
