After dismal display vs Palace, Gary O'Neil should now aim to sell £30m Wolves player this summer - opinion

Wolves should aim to cash in on one of their players following a dismal display against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.

The Old Gold continued their abysmal run of form in the Premier League as a 3-1 loss against Crystal Palace handed Wolves their sixth defeat in nine matches.

After an impressive start and middle period of the season, Gary O’Neil will want this campaign to end so he can strengthen his side in the summer.

Unfortunately, in his pre-match interview on Friday, the 40-year-old revealed an alarming transfer strategy, where the club have to sell some of their assets to buy.

It points towards another frustrating summer at Molineux, as without the financial muscle to bolster his squad, it seems like an impossible task for O’Neil to progress forward.

Just like they did when Julen Lopetegui walked out of the club in August, Wolves may consider selling some of their stars, including Pedro Neto, Rayan Ait-Nouri or Hwang Hee-Chan.

Ideally, they’ll keep hold of all three of those talents and instead sell someone who hasn’t been great for a while.

Wolves should cash in on Max Kilman after latest poor display

Max Kilman’s performances have been put under the microscope for a while and not for the right reasons.

The 26-year-old has struggled in the absence of Craig Dawson and so have Wolves, with their defence leaking an alarming 19 goals in their last nine games since Dawson suffered an injury.

Yet, the man who they famously signed from Maidenhead for £40,000 in 2018 has been ever-present in the Wanderers back line, with Kilman and Arsenal’s William Saliba the only two outfield players to have played every minute this season.

Sadly, just because he’s featured prominently doesn’t mean his performances have warranted the game-time. In today’s defeat to Palace, he won zero ground duels, made zero tackles and was bullied by Jean-Philippe Mateta.

With the club needing to sell to buy this summer, perhaps they should cash in on Kilman, who attracted interest last summer and in January.

Transfer interest in Max Kilman

According to The Times, Wolves rejected a £30 million bid from Napoli a year ago while sporting director Matt Hobbs revealed they had received multiple offers from Kilman but were determined not to sell.

Last month, it was reported by HITC that Aston Villa, Chelsea and Newcastle have joined Manchester United in the race for the Englishman.

It appears there will be more interest in Kilman this summer and surely if a similar bid came in for him, they would consider selling.

Although O’Neil claims he’s developed a lot as a captain and a footballer, which points towards the club keeping him, claiming £30m for a player they paid just £40,000 would be an excellent piece of business.

Moreover, Kilman’s less-than-impressive statistics support the argument for selling him as he ranks in the bottom 64% for tackles won per 90 and the bottom 65% for interceptions.

Indeed, if Wolves were to sell the defensive titan this summer, they could use that money to reinvest elsewhere, especially with Yerson Mosquera returning.
