Arsenal now handed blow as manager claims he has 'no doubts' over £53m Arteta target

Arsenal are aiming to add a midfielder to their squad in the summer window, but it now appears that one of their main targets may no longer be available.

Mikel Arteta is particularly keen on signing Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, to complete his dream trio alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.

Jorginho signed a new contract as a squad option, but Thomas Partey could be allowed to leave given his injury problems over the last few years.

With Rice excelling in a more advanced role, a defensive midfielder is now desired, and Zubimendi is seen as a player who can both play alongside the England star, whilst also providing cover for him.

However, Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil has now claimed that the 25-year-old will continue at his club for next season, amid previous doubts that he would be keen on exiting his boyhood club.

Real Sociedad manager claims Martin Zubimendi will reject Arsenal interest this summer

Alguacil has now claimed that he expects Zubimendi to be part of Real Sociedad’s squad going into next season.

“Martin Zubimendi wants to stay here and for sure he will stay with us at Real Sociedad next season”. “I have no doubts, he’s staying with us,” he stated.

Zubimendi has a £53m release clause, with Arsenal and Barcelona both interested, but if his manager’s words are to be believed, then it appears that he may no longer be an option for Arteta this summer.

Links to Guimaraes of Newcastle have grown stronger in recent weeks, but his £100m release clause could prove problematic.

If Arsenal do sign a more advanced midfielder instead, with Rice moving back to a number six role, then Joao Neves of Benfica could be an option, following links in January.

The 19-year-old has been outstanding in the Portuguese top flight, but given his age and potential price tag, it is unclear if Arsenal would be keen on such a gamble.

Paul Merson recently claimed that Arsenal should move to sign Chelsea star Conor Gallagher, but the Englishman would not raise the level of the midfield beyond what Jorginho currently offers as one of the three central options.

There is still a long way to go before the transfer window even opens, and a move for Zubimendi still cannot be ruled out, but the indicators are now pointing to the Spain star remaining at his club.
