Tim Walton examines how Mia Williams has broken through for Florida in SEC Softball Tournament

Mia Williams, Florida’s nine hole hitter and batting for the lowest average on the team this season, has come up with three-run home runs on back-to-back days at the SEC tournament. But head coach Tim Walton wasn’t surprised to see the freshman break through.

For Walton, Williams’ sub-.200 average belied how good she’s been for Florida all season, especially behind the scenes. So he’s pleased to see a three-run blast that gave the Gators an early lead over Missouri in the SEC championship game on Saturday is getting Williams a bit more shine.

“She’s had a really good season, just the batting average hasn’t been there,” Walton said to ESPN’s Holy Rowe. “Practices have been great, she’s really done a good job in the cages, in practice, everything we do.”

Williams also got the Gators offense going in the semifinals on Friday night, blasting a three-run home run into the scoreboard in left field to open the scoring.

And speaking with Rowe prior to the top of the 4th inning on Saturday, Walton praised the effort of starting pitcher Keagan Rothrock in working efficiently through her start to that point.

Plus, the defense has come up clutch behind Rothrock a handful of times, include a leaping catch at the warning track in center field by Kendra Falby.

“Obviously we’ve made some really good plays. Kendra made a spectacular play earlier in center. We’ve just gotta continue to change speeds, change eye levels with these guys. They’re coming out, I don’t know how many pitches she’s thrown so far but it hasn’t been a whole lot so we gotta do a good job of keeping them off balance.
