Friday night’s loss on the diamond from the Nebraska Cornhuskers was undoubtedly a difficult one for the program and fans to stomach. Heading into the 9th inning of game one of their Big Ten showdown with Indiana, the Cornhuskers had a 5-3 lead at home. That is when disaster struck for Nebraska and head coach Will Bolt.

Nebraska suffered a monumental collapse in the 9th inning, allowing seven runs to Indiana. The Cornhuskers would ultimately lose the game 10-5. After the game, Bolt lamented that this loss was a ‘tough’ one for the team.

“It’s hard. It’s tough,” said Bolt. “I mean, right now, the emotions are low, I guess you could say. But I told the team we did everything right to go win a game on Friday night for eight innings, and we just didn’t finish on the mound; that’s a tough one to swallow.”

“They took it from us there with some big, big two-strike hits. We had the bases-loaded pick; he’s out at second base. If we play catch [and] get off the field unscathed there we have a chance to go win.”

“That one’s tough.”

To start the top of the ninth, Nebraska gave up two runs to Indiana but needed one more out to get out of the inning. With the game tied at 5-5 and runners in scoring position for the Hoosiers, a failed pickoff attempt resulted in an error and an unearned run scored, giving Indiana the 6-5 lead. From there, things would completely unravel as Indiana scored four more runs following the error.

Once the first half of the inning was over and Indiana had the 10-5 lead, the energy had completely left the Nebraska dugout.

The Cornhuskers got their revenge on Saturday night in a game that required extra innings. Nebraska and Indiana were tied 2-2 entering the 10th inning. That is when Cornhuskers outfielder Cole Evans took to the plate and delivered a three-run walk-off home run to give Nebraska the 5-2 win and tie the weekend series with Indiana at a game of peace.

Indiana and Nebraska will square off one more time on Sunday, with the opening pitch scheduled for 2:00 PM CT. The winner of Sunday’s competition earns a leg up as both programs are jockeying for the Big Ten regular season title along with Illinois and Purdue.
