'I think they need': Paul Merson says league-winning manager linked with Man Utd in 2023 could fix the club

With three games remaining this season, there’s little surprise to see speculation over the managerial position at Manchester United heat up.

As Ineos arrived now a few months ago, the end of this season was always likely to be a trial period for Erik ten Hag.

Now with just three games left, it’s safe to say he’s failed that trial with just two league wins in 10 games and most recently being thrashed by Crystal Palace.

So due to this, the focus has turned to who could replace him this summer at Manchester United, as in an ideal world he likely would be replaced.

With this being a hot topic, Paul Merson has now shared his thoughts on a manager who could potentially solve the problem at United.

Paul Merson says Carlo Ancelotti would be perfect for Manchester United

On Saturday during Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday debate, Merson called for United to throw everything at getting Carlo Ancelotti as he’d solve the club’s problems.

“I think they need Ancelotti,” Merson began to explain.

“I know Ancelotti’s got another year left at Madrid, but if they go on to win the Champions League and I know it’s not a step forward, but you bring him in for a year.

“You get him in, you get him there for a year and he comes and he goes at the end of the season, ‘keep him, keep him, get rid of him, he’s a bad egg’.

“This bloke has worked with the best in the world. Watch his Real Madrid team, they’ve got superstars and they run around, that’s because of the manager.

“They need someone to come in and sort it out because at the moment Man United are a million miles off.”

Would Ancelotti be a good fit at Old Trafford?

The easy answer to this is absolutely. The Italian manager is one of the all-time footballing great managers and seems to be switched on as to how to make a club a success.

It wouldn’t be far-fetched either to see United make a move, as earlier this season in November 2023, Ancelotti was linked through reports to United.

He’d be the perfect transitional manager who’d no doubt leave excellent groundwork for whoever followed in his footsteps the year after.

Also just look at what he’s doing right now in Madrid, with young players, and exciting football, we’d love that to arrive at Old Trafford.
