‘Absolutely gutted’: 4-time podium driver frustrated on Miami GP team radio after seriously ‘unlucky’ race

The Miami Grand Prix was arguably the greatest moment of Lando Norris’s career, but several other drivers had a much tougher time during the race.

It was another strong weekend for RB as they pulled out a gap over the bottom four teams in the Constructors’ Championship.

Alpine driver Esteban Ocon finally got off the mark this season and earned the French outfit their first point of the season.

However, speaking on the team radio as he finished the Miami Grand Prix, his teammate Pierre Gasly was heard speaking on F1TV about his frustration at the race.

The 28-year-old still hasn’t scored a point this season with Alpine’s car one of the weakest on the grid at the moment.

They’ve gone from regularly scoring points at every race and achieving two podium finishes in 2023 to hoping teams ahead of them run into issues to finish in the top ten.

Both Alpine drivers have had their struggles this season but the car does appear to be slowly improving.

An upgrade package installed in China on Esteban Ocon’s car saw him challenging for a point and the car is no longer overweight which was a big issue at the start of the season.

At the start of the weekend in Miami, Gasly showed just what the latest version of the Alpine can do.

Much like Zhou Guanyu at his home race in China, he put in his best performance in the Sprint Race and finished 9.

Unfortunately, the difference in the points scoring system between the Sprint Races and the main Grand Prix means both drivers are still yet to get off the mark in 2024.

Gasly was left frustrated over the team radio in Miami as he believed he had a chance to break that duck during the race.

However, the timing of the virtual safety car thwarted the Frenchman’s chances and he had to watch his teammate take that important step forward instead of him even if he too admitted that his situation was ‘not perfect’.

Pierre Gasly’s search for first F1 point in 2024 continues

Crossing the line at the end of the Miami Grand Prix, Gasly said: “Absolutely gutted, absolutely gutted.

“Happy for the team, congrats on the first point, just absolutely gutted with this virtual safety car, absolutely got robbed.

“Apart from that we did a good race, so good job, our time will come, so freaking unlucky.”

His engineer added: “Yep, couldn’t have come at a worse time for us but we are making progress mate, we’ll get there, we’ll keep pushing, but thanks for your hard work this week.”

Where could Pierre Gasly be driving in 2025?

The frustration Gasly displayed over the team radio in Miami might be the latest contributing factor as the 28-year-old considers his future as he looks very unlikely to add to his four career podiums with the French manufacturer.

His contract at Alpine expires at the end of the season, although he may have a performance-based clause in his deal that could trigger an extension.

Alpine team principal Bruno Famin has said that he’s ‘ready to react’ should both of his drivers leave.

Gasly is expected to be one of several alternatives that Audi will consider if Carlos Sainz ends up elsewhere in the paddock.

He’s reportedly more likely to be retained by Alpine than his teammate despite being out-performed by Ocon for much of 2024.

Williams is another option for Gasly with negotiations between the driver and team having already taken place.
