'Find a way': Des Walker explains what Sheffield Wednesday have now 'got to' do next season

Des Walker has addressed what Danny Rohl has now ‘got to’ do at Sheffield Wednesday.

Danny Rohl was one of the managers of the season after guiding Sheffield Wednesday to safety.

The German only joined the club in October and the Owls already looked destined for a swift return to League One.

However, Rohl completely transformed the squad and a six-game unbeaten run saw them secure their place in the Championship on the final day.

Wednesday are now desperately trying to keep hold of the 35-year-old and fans will be confident of a successful campaign if he ends up staying at Hillsborough.

They are still at risk of going through a similar season to this one though, if they fail to do certain things right.

Speaking at this weekend’s charity event, Wednesday legend Des Walker said: “#SWFC have got to find a way of being better next year. This club deserves to be better and to be challenging at the top end of the Championship at the very least. Hopefully next year they will turn the corner.”

Three things the Owls need to do to help out Danny Rohl

It feels like Sheffield Wednesday are already guaranteed to be on track with Danny Rohl taking the reins, but they still need to make major improvements elsewhere to give him a helping hand.

The Owls’ squad has looked miles better in recent months, but Dejphon Chansiri will need to open his wallet and allow Rohl to add to his ranks if they are to be in with a chance of pushing for the play-offs.

Rohl will likely use his contacts in the Bundesliga to bring in some talent, but their usual tactics plunging back into the free agent and loan market may not be enough to make progress.

The club have already begun improvements to the training ground too, which is another sign that a new era is on its way at Middlewood Road.

Tying down key players to new contracts is also vital, as heading into pre-season with a weakened team will already make the German coach’s job more difficult.

If the Owls can add new contracts for the likes of Di’Shon Bernard and Josh Windass, then the club will already be in a much better state once the players return from their summer holidays.
