Report: ‘Magnificent’ F1 race winner ‘no longer’ wants to stay at his current team beyond 2024 season

The first six race weekends of the Formula 1 season have provided lots of action and a wealth of information for drivers and teams trying to figure out their futures.

Fernando Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg have already made their decisions for 2025 and beyond which is starting to build the pressure on their rivals.

The German outlet Auto Bild has shared more information about one driver who appears to have made his mind up about next season.

The further a team is down the Constructors’ Championship right now, the more difficult it will be to convince drivers to join them for next year and beyond.

The exceptional is Sauber, who will become the works Audi team in 2026 and that was enough for Hulkenberg to decide to leave Haas at the end of the current campaign.

Entering his fourth season with Alpine, Esteban Ocon has decided he no longer wants to race for the team beyond 2024.

The French outfit helped him earn his only Formula 1 win back in 2021, but now he seems set to seek a new challenge on the grid.

Esteban Ocon no longer wants to drive for Alpine beyond 2024

For the first time this season, Ocon achieved a top-ten finish at the Miami Grand Prix, narrowly losing out to Alonso in a late battle for 9, but opening up enough of a gap behind him to stave off Hulkenberg.

While that was undoubtedly a positive moment for the team and a decent step forward, Ocon admitted the situation within the team is still ‘not perfect’.

The 27-year-old was praised for his car control on the first lap when he narrowly avoided making contact with teammate Pierre Gasly.

Martin Brundle even went as far as to say he managed to do something he never thought he’d see in Miami.

Alpine team principal Bruno Famin is ready to react if either Ocon or Gasly decide they no longer want to race for the team next year.

The one-time race winner looks set to have several options on the table for 2025 if Alpine can’t improve enough to convince the Frenchman to change his mind.

Esteban Ocon has several options for 2025 F1 race seat

The report from Auto Bild states that Ocon no longer has the desire to stay at Alpine beyond the end of the current campaign.

They also suggest that his teammate Pierre Gasly is in a similar position, although it’s understood that the 28-year-old is more likely to stay beyond the end of the current campaign.

One of the most high-profile options for Ocon next season appears to be Audi.

While Sauber are currently in a worse position than Alpine in the Constructors’ Championship, the imminent arrival of the German manufacturer does make them an appealing option.

However, Ocon might be relying on Carlos Sainz turning Audi down and joining another outfit such as Red Bull or Ferrari.

Ocon – who was described as ‘magnificent’ by Sky Sports commentator David Croft – is still part of the Mercedes roster and Toto Wolff would like Ocon to move to Williams.

Like Sauber, Williams also haven’t scored a point this season, but under the leadership of James Vowles, they appear to be concentrating on long-term stability rather than short-term success.

Ocon isn’t going to be a hugely influential figure in the driver’s market until the likes of Sainz have confirmed their next move.

It’s hard to ignore his recent form though and that might provide him with a wealth of choice for 2025.
