Mike Dean gives verdict on whether Amad should have had penalty for Man Utd v Arsenal

Manchester United’s defeat at The Emirates last September had plenty of talking points, none of which fell favourably for the Red Devils.

The return match at Old Trafford also had a controversial moment, where Amad Diallo felt he should have had a penalty.

The Ivorian slalomed into the penalty area before being felled. The question was whether he was brought down, or whether he initiated the contact.

The referee played on, although the game was paused for Amad to undergo treatment.

Mike Dean verdict on Amad incident

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean took the view that the on-pitch call was the correct one, not to award Amad the spot kick.

He told Sky Sports: “I think it’s the case of Amad standing on Partey’s foot. No penalty for me.”

This was a point made on BBC radio by former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison, who said: “It is a not a foul and nowhere near a foul.

“Amad Diallo steps on Thomas Partey.”

On Sky Sports commentary, Gary Neville asked whether Partey’s foot had extended to catch Amad. Even if it did, the referee and VAR team did not agree.

United went in at half-time 1-0 down, left to rue that the penalty was not given to present the team with a chance to equalise.

Amad a bright spark

While there was no penalty given to Manchester United, the incident showcased a lively performance for Amad on his first Premier League start of the season.

Supporters have been crying out for Amad to get an opportunity, and he performed well in this fixture, suggesting he warrants a closer look from Erik ten Hag.

Former United defender David May told MUTV: “Amad has been a breath of fresh air on that right hand side. Whenever he gets it, he looks to do something positive.”
