GAINESVILLE, Fla. — With a single in the eighth inning, Florida Gators first baseman Jac Caglianone tied the UF record for consecutive games with a hit. Caglianone tied Jacob Young, who set the record at 30 during the 2021 season.
The pair reached the milestone in very different fashions. Young was a contact hitter who legged out infield singles. Caglianone set the BBCOR era record for home runs in a season in 2023 and has been the focus of every team the Gators have faced in 2024. Throughout the streak, Caglianone had to deal with being walked and pitched around.
Over his career, Caglianone has launched 68 home runs. He trails All-American Matt LaPorta by just XXX home runs to claim the Florida record. Caglianone has been impressive this season, hitting safely in 50 of Florida’s 51 games. He became the second-fastest Gator ever to reach 200 hits. Caglianone’s also tied the NCAA record with a nine-game home run streak from April 6 – April 19.
Caglianone paces the Gators in virtually every offensive statistic including batting average (.417), on-base percentage (.527), slugging (.870), OPS (1.397), hits (80), homers 28, RBI (55), runs (61) and walks (37 – 17 intentional). The two-way standout ranks second in the SEC in hits, homers, total bases, batting average, and slugging (seventh in NCAA), third in OBP, sixth in RBI and seventh in runs scored. On the mound, Caglianone is 5-1 and his .223 batting average against is the 12th-best in the SEC, as the southpaw has been charged with the ninth-fewest hits allowed and fourth-fewest homers surrendered among qualified SEC hurlers.
Jacob Young’s streak
Young was a very different hitter than Caglianone. Young went 51-123 (.415) during his streak, with this infield single to break Tim Olson’s record set in 2000.
Young’s 30-game streak stretched out over 646 days, starting late in the 2019 campaign and continuing into the 2021 season.
