£17m ex-Manchester United cult hero has his contract terminated with two games still left to play

Few Manchester United regulars from the Sir Alex Ferguson era are still playing as we approach 11 years since his departure.

Look through the United squad from the 2012-13 season – Feruson’s final campaign in the Old Trafford dugout.

The likes of Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Dimitar Berbatov and Nemanja Vidic have long since retired.

David De Gea is without a club but there are a handful of players still turning out around the world.

Jonny Evans is back at United, Ashley Young and Danny Welbeck are still going strong in the Premier League and Javier Hernandez rejoined boyhood club Chivas earlier this year.

United’s last Premier League title win feels like a long, long time ago now and one cult hero from that title-winning side now faces a big call on his future.

Nani contract terminated

United signing an exciting young winger from Portuguese side Sporting worked pretty well back in 2003.

Cristiano Ronaldo made the move to Old Trafford and went on to become a superstar, so United went back to the well in 2007.

In came Nani after showing huge promise in Lisbon with United paying up around £17million to secure his signature.

Nani became a cult hero at Old Trafford, racking up more than 200 appearances for the club before leaving in 2015.

Now 37, Nani finds himself in Turkey with Adana Demirspor – but he is on the move once again.

Adana Demirspor have now confirmed that they have terminated Nani’s contract by mutual consent.

Their statement thanked Nani for his efforts whilst confirming that he is on his way out with two Super Lig games still left to play this season.

Nani played 28 league games this season, registering four goals and two assists.

Now a free agent, Nani will have a decision to make on whether to keep playing towards his 38th birthday in November, or whether to hang up his boots.

Where has Nani been since leaving United?

United allowed Nani to leave on loan in Louis van Gaal’s first transfer window at the club, paving the way for a return to Sporting.

The next stop was Turkey as Fenerbahce secured a permanent deal and Nani has been something of a nomad ever since.

The winger signed for Valencia in 2016, then joined Lazio on loan and completed another return to Sporting.

Nani tried his luck in Major League Soccer with Orlando City, becoming a fan favourite with 31 goals in 88 games.

Venezia brought Nani back to Europe for a brief spell in 2022 before Melbourne Victory lured him to Australia.

Some may have thought that Nani’s career would have been over then, but he returned for another spell in Turkey with Adana Demirspor.

Now available once again, Nani may be tempted to continue his incredible journey; but if he hangs up his boots, he will certainly have the love and support of United fans.
