‘Ulitimately’: Graeme Souness shares how he really feels after watching Celtic beat Rangers

Celtic’s win over Rangers at the weekend has absolutely created some great headlines over the past couple of days.

With just three points separating both teams before Saturday’s game, there was a lot riding on the result for Celtic and Rangers.

For Celtic, a victory meant that the title was all but over. But for the Ibrox club, a win would have meant they had a real chance of winning the title.

As it happened, Celtic got the three points and now all they need is one more point at Kilmarnock on Wednesday night and the real celebrations can start.

Graeme Souness ‘hurts’ after Celtic win

We already discussed this morning how Ally McCoist said he had no sour grapes over Celtic’s win. The former Rangers striker admitted that Celtic are the better team but also caveated it with another claim that these are the two poorest teams he has watched in a long time.

Yeah, doesn’t sound sour at all. And now we have Graeme Souness. The former Rangers manager was asked how he felt about the defeat and he was completely honest about his feelings on it.

Souness said [talkSPORT], “Ultimately, disappointment. I felt they started [well]. They [Rangers] didn’t concede a goal in the early minutes this time.

“They weathered the early storm at Parkhead and started to settle down. Fabio Silva had the best chance and how he’s put it wide from there only he knows.

“For me, there’s not a lot between them. Ultimately, it’s not a new thing. They’ve drawn 3-3 and lost two games 2-1 and had a man sent off at Parkhead.

“They are ahead of Rangers. They have better strikers. I don’t see a gulf in the quality of football they play.

“They have better goal-getters and that ultimately does decide games.

And when it was pointed out that Celtic are on course for their 12th title in 14 seasons, Souness said, “That hurts, of course that hurts.”

It’s clear that the reality of Celtic heading to another title win is really hurting those close to Rangers. The disappointment of the early Philippe Clement hype is reverberating around most of the Ibrox club’s former players.

However, for Celtic, the celebrations are currently on ice. Nothing is won yet and Rodgers still has a tricky Kilmarnock tie to negotiate.

Then and only then will the Celtic boss allow his team to relax and then we can look forward to a title party at Parkhead against St Mirren on Saturday.
