History could repeat itself as Arsenal match feat achieved by 1998 and 2002 title-winners

Arsenal are currently on course to repeat two great moments in their history, having overcome Manchester United on Sunday.

Arsenal battled to a 1-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

This win kept the Gunners’ Premier League title dream alive. All eyes will now be on Manchester City’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday evening. If the Gunners’ North London rivals can take points off of the reigning champions then Mikel Arteta’s side will go into their final game of the campaign with the destiny of the title in their own hands.

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has promised to get a Tottenham tattoo if they can get a positive result against the Cityzens.

Arsenal must focus on their own task, though. They were able to get the win they needed at Old Trafford in order to ensure that the title race goes down to the final week of the season.

Arsenal repeat 1998 and 2002 successes against Man Utd

The Gunners have form when it comes to beating the Red Devils in the run in. In 2002, via a Sylvain Wiltord goal, Arsenal won the Premier League title with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

In 1998, the Gunners beat Manchester United 1-0 on their own patch on their way to securing a Premier League and FA Cup double.

If Arsenal do go on to be crowned champions this time around, then it will be the third time that they have won the Premier League having beaten Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford during the run-in. For those who go in for good omens, Sunday’s result will have provided a major boost.

The big game success Mikel Arteta has brought to Arsenal

Arsenal certainly weren’t at their best on Sunday. They could not control the match in the middle of the park, where Arsenal fans felt that Thomas Partey particularly struggled. They also failed to create a huge number of clear chances.

However, the Gunners’ success this season has been built on their solid defensive foundations. They have also shown an ability to grind out results against other ‘big six’ teams. Arsenal beat Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur home and away this season, and also went unbeaten against Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City.

This ability to go toe-to-toe with the other top sides shows just how far the Gunners have come under Arteta. It wasn’t so long ago that Arsenal were whipping boys for the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool.
