Arsenal confirm exit of all-time Women's Super League top goalscorer

By Katie Catherall

Arsenal have confirmed that Vivianne Miedema will depart the club at the end of the season, after seven successful years with the Gunners.

The WSL's all-time top goalscorer and two-time Golden Boot winner will bring the curtain down on her Arsenal career once her contract expires this summer.

Miedema joined the Gunners in June 2017 after leaving Bayern Munich and quickly became one of the team's most important players. The Dutch forward has gone to make 172 appearances in an Arsenal shirt, netting 125 goals and 50 assists in that time, but has seen the last 17 months of her career disrupted by an ACL tear and other injury niggles.

A WSL title winner in 2018/19, Miedema, who has also won the Women's League Cup three times, thanked her teammates on Arsenal's official channels for what she described as a "special" seven years in north London.

"After seven special years, it's time for my Arsenal journey to come to an end," Miedema said. "To have represented a club like this with so much history and tradition has been an absolute honour so above all else, I'd like to say thank you for making this chapter of my life so memorable.

"In football you never quite know how long you'll be somewhere. You've got to enjoy each moment as it comes. But early on at Arsenal I knew this was the place for me to grow and challenge myself as a player and a person too.

"It's been an honour to represent the Arsenal and it's been a pleasure to play with many talented players, ex-teammates and fellow Dutchies.

"Without all these amazing teammates and of course the fans, my story here wouldn't have been as special as it was."

ESPN and other sources have indicated that Manchester City is likely to Miedema's next landing spot - a team who could be crowned WSL champions if they can hold off the charge of Emma Hayes' Chelsea.
