Arteta makes 'history' as Arsenal set incredible new club-record during Man Utd victory

Arsenal achieved a club record with their 1-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Despite not being at their best, Arsenal were will stable to claim another vital three points against Manchester United.

At this stage in the campaign, winning is all that matters. Mikel Arteta won’t have been hugely enamoured with his side’s display, but this victory means that their Premier League title dream remains alive and kicking.

Arsenal are now on track to repeat two of their great historic successes, having beaten the Red Devils by a 1-0 scoreline on their own patch yet again.

However, despite this result, the title race is still not in the Gunners’ own hands. They still need Manchester City to drop points in order to stand any chance of being crowned champions.

All eyes will now be on Tottenham Hotspur, who will host Pep Guardiola’s men on Tuesday evening. Arsenal icon Paul Merson has now vowed to get a Spurs tattoo if the Gunners’ North London rivals can pull off a positive result against the reigning champions.

How Arsenal made history against Manchester United

Even if Arsenal don’t end up winning the title, this has already undeniably been a successful campaign. In terms of numbers, it is the greatest season in the club’s history. Arsenal’s win over Manchester United was their 27th Premier League victory of the season so far.

The Gunners have never before won so many games in a single Premier League campaign. In both the 2001/02 season when they won the league and FA Cup double, and in 2003/04 when the Invincibles went through the entire league campaign unbeaten on their way to being champions, Arsenal only managed 26 wins.

After the final whistle at Old Trafford, Arteta spoke about this record-breaking feat. The Spanish coach stated: “That’s not progress, that’s history.”

The best is yet to come for Arsenal

Last season, Arteta led the Gunners to a second-place finish with 26 wins. Whilst Arsenal may be runners-up once again this time around, it is fair to say they are making both progress and history under the current manager.

Arsenal will be well-placed to mount another title challenge next season. Arteta has built a young, talented squad who are hopefully still only at the start of their journey together. This is a club on the rise, and the best is surely yet to come.
