'The harsh reality...': O'Neil claims Wolves need to do something 'really big' this summer in Fosun plea

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has insisted that the club need to make a lot of changes in the summer in order to improve next season, seeing Fosun targetted once more.

With one game remaining in the 2023/24 calendar, Wolves will firmly have their eyes on the summer, when Gary O’Neil will have the chance to identify where his squad needs strengthening.

The Old Gold were spoken about as one of the clubs that could secure European football next term however, successive injuries to key players triggered poor form, seeing the Midlands club now unlikely to finish in the top ten.

It’s a shame for the season to fizzle out as it has although, Wolves’ recent downfall only reinforces just how much needs to be done at Molineux in the summer, both on and off the pitch.

Since O’Neil took charge days before the start of the season, the Englishman has been aware of how limited the depth is in his squad, something that must be addressed ahead of next term.

Gary O’Neil calls on Wolves to make big changes in the summer

Speaking after Wolves’ defeat to Crystal Palace, the manager stressed the importance of the squad’s improvement, after the Midlands club recorded their fourth loss in their previous five Premier League matches.

Despite the dreary form, O’Neil assured that next season will be ‘fine’ however, hammered home how far his side is from progressing in the top flight, as per Express and Star.

“Next season will be fine. We need to do some really big work in the summer though.

“Look at what Crystal Palace have. Just compare the amount of mistakes on the ball and they’re a long way ahead of us.

“Attacking players and attacking threat, they look a long way ahead of us.”

While a lot of the manager’s frustration was aimed at what he saw on the pitch against the Eagles, another stark warning was sent to Fosun ahead of the summer transfer window.

“We go into the summer with that as the harsh reality needing to find a way to improve it, whether it’s on the training ground or in the window.”

Pressure will be on Fosun in the summer transfer window

Last summer was a disaster for Wolves, who lost key players to generate essential profit to adhere to Financial Fair Play rulings.

While it was necessary to offload the likes of Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes, this summer cannot be the same, with O’Neil stressing the need for new faces in the transfer window.

It’s not the first time that a warning has been issued to Fosun, who were called out earlier this year by the Wolves boss for the inability to raise funds to sign a striker in January.

The Old Gold were fortunate to have O’Neil take the reigns from Julen Lopetegui last summer, with the boss now needing support in the market in order to keep his encouraging project at Molineux running.

Seven losses from 11 games in the Premier League between March and May only emphasises the changes that must be made at Wolves this summer, with Fosun now having the opportunity to show interest in what the manager can offer the club in the future.
