News digest: Two spectacles come to Slovakia over weekend

Northern lights once again over Slovakia

Usually, the aurora borealis is visible around the north magnetic pole. However, due to a strong geomagnetic storm in the Sun, the northern lights were visible over the weekend in several parts of Slovakia, including the town of Nové Zámky in the south.

Night of literature

This Wednesday, the 16th edition of the Noc Literatúry (Night of Literature) event will take place in several cities across Slovakia. Slovak actors will start reading works of contemporary Slovak authors, as well as translated books of contemporary European authors at 18:00 in every venue.   • On Monday, the Slovak men's ice-hockey national team beat USA 5:4 in overtime, earning the second victory in the group stage of the 2024 World Championship in the Czech Republic after beating Kazakhstan 6:2 on Sunday. (TASR)
  • On Sunday morning, scientist Lucia Janičová became the first Slovak woman to climb Mount Everest. She started in Nepal and climbed the peak from the southeast ridge. She used oxygen.
  • According to a new survey for the private television network Markíza, he most trusted political leader in Slovakia is president-elect Peter Pellegrini (Hlas), with 47 percent. On the other hand, 52 percent of the people do not trust him. He is followed by President Zuzana Čaputová (45 percent as opposed to 54 percent) and unsuccessful presidential candidate Ivan Korčok (37 percent as opposed to 62 percent). (daily Sme)
  • Sweetened milk drinks, yoghurt drinks and plant-based drinks should be exempted from the new tax on sweetened soft drinks in the works, the Finance Ministry reported on Monday, adding that further changes to the bill will be announced in due course. Learn more about the tax here. (TASR)
  • Slovakia voted for the resolution on strengthening the rights of the Palestinian state in the UN in order to support a peaceful two-state solution, says Foreign Affairs Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer). (TASR)
  • Real salaries in March were higher on a year-on-year basis in all ten monitored sectors, with six achieving a growth exceeding 5 percent, the Statistics Office reported on Monday. (TASR)
