Russian parliament approves deputy prime ministers

Moscow (dpa)— Russia's parliament, the Duma, has approved all candidates for Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin's 10 deputy posts by a large majority.

Parliamentary speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said on Monday that the candidates are well-known to the MPs. "With them, we have gone through the difficult challenges that our country has faced."

Denis Manturov will assume the role of first deputy prime minister, overseeing the industry sector.

The best voting result was achieved by Dmitry Patrushev, the son of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's confidant and former secret service chief Nikolai Patrushev, who was secretary of the National Security Council until recently.

There were 433 MPs who voted in favour of the younger Patrushev, who was promoted from minister of agriculture to deputy prime minister, with no votes against or abstentions.

Dmitry Chernyshenko, who is responsible for science and education, received 432 votes in favour and Manturov 431. All three were elected unanimously.

Only Tatyana Golikova, responsible for health and social affairs (with 362 votes in favour and 66 abstentions) and Dmitry Grigorenko, responsible for finance and digitalization (with 374 votes in favour and 55 abstentions), each received one vote against.

In accordance with the constitution, the Russian government resigned after President Vladimir Putin was inaugurated for his fifth term.

The most significant change in the cabinet is the replacement of Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, who is to be replaced by Andrei Beloussov.

His candidature still has to be confirmed by the Federation Council. However, the procedure is considered a formality.
