‘Different level’: Gary Neville says Tottenham player has been the best in his position in the PL this season

Gary Neville has named one Tottenham Hotspur player in his Premier League Team of the Season.

It has been a mixed debut campaign for Ange Postecoglou after such a brilliant start to life in north London.

The Aussie boss was yet to taste defeat after his first 10 league games and had Spurs sitting top of the Premier League table.

Injuries and suspensions disrupted a strong start and Tottenham now find themselves in fifth place, with an outside shot of landing in the top four.

Despite a difficult run of form over the last few weeks, several young players have emerged as real prospects for the future under Postecoglou’s guidance this season.

And Gary Neville believes one Tottenham youngster has been the best player in his position over the past eight months.

Neville names Destiny Udogie in Premier League Team of the Season

Destiny Udogie arrived at Spurs back in the summer of 2022 but spent the following campaign on loan at Udinese.

The extra year of first-team football clearly paid off for the Italian full-back as he hit the ground running under Postecoglou.

Despite missing the final few games of the season through injury, Neville has named the 21-year-old in his best XI over the likes of Manchester City star Josko Gvardiol.

“It’s a struggle for most teams at left-back,” the Manchester United legend told Sky Sports. “You look at the top two teams. City – it’s been a struggle at times, obviously Gvardiol has come in for the last few months.

“For Arsenal, it is the one position they have changed around. Udogie – different level when he played for Tottenham and such a massive miss for them [when he’s been out]. So, I have got him at left-back.”

Udogie’s impressive debut campaign at Tottenham

When you consider the fact that Udogie had predominantly played as a wing-back at Udinese, it makes his first year at Spurs all the more impressive.

The Italian has adjusted to Postecoglou’s demands with ease and looked comfortable while playing in that inverted full-back role.

Tottenham have struggled in recent weeks without the youngster, with Postecoglou even experimenting with Oliver Skipp at left-back.

There are certain areas where Udogie’s game needs plenty of work, particularly his passing as that can leave a lot to be desired. But in what is his first full season in English football, the youngster has had a hand in five goals in 28 league appearances.
