‘Nice move’: Damon Hill reacts to something ‘totally bonkers’ Adrian Newey did this weekend

While there wasn’t a Formula 1 Grand Prix last weekend, there was still plenty of action on tracks around the world to react to.

In Formula 4, Alpine Academy driver Abbi Pulling became the first woman to win a British Formula 4 race.

There was also the Monaco Historique event on the streets of Monte Carlo, showcasing some of the greatest cars in Formula 1’s storied history.

Lando Norris offered some advice to his CEO Zak Brown after seeing him drive Alan Jones’s championship-winning Williams.

Another F1 figure racing in Monaco at the weekend was Adrian Newey and Damon Hill has reacted to a clip of his driving.

The 65-year-old is one of the most talked about people in the paddock right now after announcing his exit from Red Bull.

He appears to be taking his mind off thinking about his future by driving another iconic car.

Despite Red Bull dominating Formula 1 since the incredible battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton at the end of the 2021 season, Newey has decided to step away from the current champions.

He’s helped mastermind more than a dozen Constructors’ Championships and aided Verstappen in becoming a triple-world champion.

However, internal frustrations within Red Bull have been bubbling away and Newey has decided now is the right time to step away.

The timing is particularly interesting as he can now join a new team in time to have some impact on their 2026 car ahead of the new regulations.

Unsurprisingly, that’s made him even more desirable to Red Bull’s rivals and he’s got plenty of offers on the table.

Ferrari are desperate to sign Newey and he could finally team up with Lewis Hamilton after decades of the pair admiring each other from afar.

Aston Martin have also made a huge bid to sign Newey and build on their recent momentum.

Newey doesn’t appear to be thinking about his future right now and instead has been driving in Monaco and Damon Hill very much enjoyed what he saw.

It shows just how much of a fan of racing he is and a recent trip to Italy which many assumed was to meet Ferrari was an opportunity for Newey to drive at Mugello.

Adrian Newey putting driving talents into action in Monte Carlo

Newey was driving a Lotus 49 and racing against a V12 Matra MS120B on the streets of Monaco.

He took a tighter line into the first of the two iconic hairpins on the Grand Prix circuit and surged past his opponent heading into the tight right-hand corner.

Reacted to the move, Hill said: “Nice move. Totally bonkers of course. #f1 #HistoricMonaco #MonacoGP #Lotus49.”

The Lotus 49 made its debut in Formula 1 in 1967, with Jim Clark and Graham Hill being the first drivers to race the original version of the car.

Clark finished third in the championship but Lotus won the 1968 Constructors’ Championship the following year with Graham Hill at the helm and Newey showed in Monaco why it was such a successful car.

Lotus kept updating the car and they won the Constructors’ Championship again in 1970 with the introduction of the Lotus 72, another iconic F1 car.

Newey is always learning and it wouldn’t be a surprise if driving a car that’s more than 50 years old still inspired his thinking when it comes to modern Formula 1 cars.

The question is, which team will benefit from his genius once he departs Red Bull at the start of next year?
