‘I was harming the team’: Chelsea star admits he was nowhere near his best this season

One Chelsea player has admitted he was actually being a hindrance to the team when he was playing this season.

The Blues look as if they may actually qualify for European football at the end of this season, with that feat looking unlikely at one stage.

It has been reported that Mauricio Pochettino’s role at the club is by no means safe with a top seven placing, with it being claimed that the owners see Europa League as a minimum demand.

The Argentine has stumbled across a really strong midfield setup in recent weeks, with Moises Caicedo partnering Conor Gallagher.

With Marc Cucurella inverting, there has been a real impotence on winning the ball back with speed and launching attacks.

The midfield duo have been playing in the absence of Enzo Fernandez, whose season came to an end when he underwent surgery to sort out an ongoing issue.

Enzo Fernandez says he was harming Chelsea

He told journalist Christian Martin that he has been playing through injury for some time now, and was struggling to have an impact for his side.

He said: “I was playing with pain and injections for 8 months. I had to make the decision to have surgery, it was the best. I was harming the team and didn’t want to expose myself.

“I’m fine, people can relax. I’m evolving day by day and I’m eager for the Copa America to arrive. I’ve already started training on the field, the recovery is advanced, and I hope to be training with the National Team soon. I’m very anxious for this Copa America, it will be the first time I play in it.”

Caicedo and Gallagher starring in midfield

Fernandez faces a challenge proving to everyone that he should feature in Chelsea’s best midfield going forwards.

There may also be a lot of pressure on him to replace the impact Gallagher has had in recent weeks, with reports still flying around that he could be sold at the end of this season.

This is despite the England international being a crucial part of Pochettino’s plans right now, which could be a statement as to how much backing he has from the owners at this stage.
