Exclusive: Tottenham now closely watching 'amazing' central midfielder who Man United released in 2020

  • EXCLUSIVE from Graeme Bailey

TBR Football understands that former Manchester United starlet Angel Gomes is attracting attention from a host of sides keen on bringing him back to England.

London-born Gomes came through the ranks at Old Trafford and made a handful of Premier League appearances.

But in the summer of 2020, Gomes opted to reject the chance of a new contract at United due to concerns over first-team opportunities.

He accepted a five-year deal with French outfit Lille and he has not disappointed, becoming a key performer for the club. This season nobody currently has more assists than him with eight to his name.

Tottenham among clubs eyeing move for Angel Gomes

Lille are trying to tie down the 23-year-old to a new long-term deal, but TBR understands that a number of clubs from around Europe are paying close attention to the former England Under-21 midfielder.

TBR can reveal that Tottenham, Aston Villa and West Ham have also been watching him closely in recent months, and have been impressed with what they have seen.

We can also confirm that Manchester United have also been keeping tabs on Gomes’s progress and sources believe they would consider bringing him back to Old Trafford in the future.

There is also interest in Germany and Italy, with the likes of Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan amongst those to watch him.

Spurs will hope to add more creativity to their midfield this summer

Certainly, Tottenham may welcome the chance to add more creativity to their options in the middle of the park in the summer.

Only Heung-min Son and Brennan Johnson have provided more league assists than Gomes has in Ligue 1. Neither Yves Bissouma and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg meanwhile, have scored or set up a teammate in the top-flight this year.

Gomes also has the versatility to play as a holding or attacking midfielder, having frequently been moved throughout the season.

Anthony Elanga noted that Gomes was an ‘amazing‘ talent, so it would be a potential coup if Tottenham could be the side to bring him back to the Premier League this summer.

But clearly, there is a lot of competition for his signature.
