'Where we belong!': Agbonlahor aims cheeky dig at Newcastle after Aston Villa's stunning comeback last night

Gabby Agbonlahor was buzzing after Aston Villa bounced back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 with Liverpool on Monday night.

Villa found themselves 1-0 down after just two minutes as an Emi Martinez clanger saw the Argentine register the third Premier League own goal of his career.

They levelled swiftly, as the returning Youri Tielemans swept home an Ollie Watkins pass, but goals from Cody Gakpo and Jarell Quansah left Villa fans’ hopes of a result in tatters.

That was until Jhon Duran entered the fray on 79 minutes.

Just ten minutes later, the 20-year-old striker had scored an incredible brace to level the scores at three each and Agbonlahor reacted to the crazy comeback after the game.

Gabby Agbonlahor claims Aston Villa are ‘back’

Agbonlahor is Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer and enjoyed relative success at the club as he was part of the Martin O’Neil side that regularly secured top six finishes in the 2000s.

However, the striker never managed to fire his club to the Champions League.

In fact, no Villa has played in Europe’s primary club competition since 1983, meaning manager Unai Emery is on the brink of steering the current crop to a historic achievement.

The result in itself did not secure a fourth-place finish, but the manner of the comeback combined with the fact Tottenham Hotspur must beat Manchester City on Tuesday night to take the race to the final day left Agbonlahor unable to contain his excitement.

The former Villa man posted on ‘X’: “This club Aston Villa is back! Sleeping giant is wide awake!!! Join us tomorrow in wishing Man City to win! UTV the champions league is where we belong!! Leave the Mickey Mouse cup to West Ham and Newcastle”

Villa cannot yet take Champions League football for granted, but they are very much on the brink.

If Tottenham achieve a shock win over champions City on Tuesday, then Villa will simply have to better Spurs’ result on Sunday.

The concerning thing with that is that Emery takes his side to face a Crystal Palace side reborn under Oliver Glasner, having won five and drawn one in their last six games.

On the contrary, Tottenham face an already-relegated Sheffield United side that have won just once in their past 14 games and have conceded a whopping 101 league goals this campaign.

Villa crashed out of the Europa Conference League last Thursday, losing 6-2 on aggregate to Olympiacos in the semi-final.

Agbonlahor could not resist taking a cheeky dig at Newcastle United and West Ham United, with the former possibly playing in the competition next season and West Ham winning it last year.

Villa fans will hope their former striker has not been too smug too soon and the pop-shot at their Premier League rivals will not come back to bite them come the end of the season on Sunday.
