Arsenal icon Mesut Ozil now makes 'promise' to Tottenham fans if they beat Man City

Arsenal fans find themselves in a strange position as they are hoping for bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur to take points off Manchester City.

Man City have just two games left including their trip to Spurs, whilst Arsenal only have their final day encounter with Everton remaining in the Premier League title race.

If Man City win in North London, they will go two points ahead of Arsenal, and a big win will also see them overtake the Gunners on goal difference.

However, any dropped points would put Arsenal into the driving seat for the title, and this means that fans are now hoping for Spurs to win or draw, on what is an extremely rare occasion.

This also extends to the club beyond the fans, as former star Mesut Ozil has now expressed his desire for Man City to drop points.

On his X account, the World Cup winner hilariously expressed his support for his old rivals for the one game, in order to help Ozil’s former side win the Premier League.

“First time ever tonight: COME ON YOU SPURSSS!! If Tottenham don’t lose this game I will never make fun of them again… I promise,” he posted.

This is not the first time Ozil has had a dig at Tottenham over the years. In December 2023, he labelled the North London side “bottle job FC” after they threw away a lead to lose at home to West Ham.

Despite Ozil mostly featuring in a struggling Arsenal side towards the end of Arsene Wenger’s reign, he still got the better of Spurs on several occasions.

Ozil was the player of the match in a 2-0 victory over Spurs at the Emirates in November 2017, providing the assist for Shkodran Mustafi’s opener, and he also scored in his first away derby at White Hart Lane, but Arsenal went on to lose 2-1.

The German won two, drew five and lost three of his Arsenal appearances against Tottenham, but did win in both of his Champions League matches against them with Real Madrid, providing two assists in a 4-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu in the 2011 quarter finals.
