‘Interesting’: Jamie Carragher can’t believe what he’s seen from £77m Man City star recently

Jamie Carragher has said that he’s been stunned by what one Manchester City player has been doing on the pitch recently.

The Citizens are in the crucial stages of another Premier League title race, with just two games left to play.

After tonight’s away match at Tottenham Hotspur, the Blues will take on West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium for their final game of the season.

With Pep Guardiola’s side having won their seven previous league games, one pundit has highlighted someone in the City squad who has played a big role in the team over the past few weeks, catching a lot of attention in the process.

Speaking on the latest Monday Night Football program on Sky Sports, Carragher had this to say about Josko Gvardiol and his recent run of goalscoring form.

He said: “The interesting thing is that I think left-back has always been a problem for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

“Lots of people have been tried there, I think even Gvardiol has said himself, he has looked like a centre-back at times this season playing left-back.

“But you look at his record of late and could you believe, he has actually scored the same amount of Premier League goals as [Gabriel] Jesus this season?”

During the previous summer transfer window, City shelled out £77m to sign the defender from RB Leipzig.

Since then, the 22-year-old has gone on to make 39 appearances across all competitions, 26 of which being in the Premier League.

Gvardiol has been a useful goalscorer for City recently

In terms of the goals he’s scored, the defender has found the back of the net four times in the league, all of which have come throughout his five previous games.

In fact, during City’s recent 4-0 win over Fulham, Gvardiol scored twice and was even in a conversation to take the late penalty that Julian Alvarez ended up putting away in injury time.

Having now scored as many league goals as Jesus, James Maddison, Alexis Mac Allister and Lucas Paqueta, prior to tonight’s match at Spurs, this makes it easy to see why Carragher has been so impressed by what Gvardiol has done in front of goal this season.
