Knuckles season 2: Is it happening? Release date, news and plot

Knuckles was the first spin-off of the Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movies. This buddy-cop style comedy between the legendary videogame character and bumbling policeman Wade went down a storm with viewers, setting a record as the most-watched show on Paramount+.

With Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also set to release in 2024, you may be wondering if the Echidna warrior and his friend will be back for more. We’ve rounded up everything we know about the possibility of the return of Knuckles. You can also read a similar article we have for Fallout season 2.

Will Knuckles return for season 2?

Paramount has not confirmed whether there will be a Knuckles season 2 or not. However, there is scope to bring back both characters, should the studio wish to.

In an interview with Paste Magazine, franchise and series executive producer Toby Ascher said the following: “If something is working really successfully, and we have a really great story to tell, we’re definitely going to expand on it. I don’t think there’s any closed doors on future television, future seasons of Knuckles, so everything is wide open. I think it’s important to us that we’re not just making stuff to make stuff.”

Considering the popularity of the show, we wouldn’t be surprised if Paramount gave it the green light – but then again, there are plenty more opportunities to expand the Cinematic World of Sonic the Hedgehog.

When could the release date for Knuckles season 2 be?

Until we know whether Knuckles is renewed or not, it’s hard to predict a release date. Sonic 3 is due to hit cinemas in December 2024. Therefore, if a new season materializes, it won’t be until 2025 or later.

Which cast members could return if Knuckles season 2 happens?

Spoilers for Knuckles season 1 below.

If Knuckles gets the go-ahead for another installment, we’d expect the following cast members to return:

  • Idris Elba as Knuckles (voice)
  • Adam Pally as Wade Whipple
  • Stockard Channing as Wendy Whipple
  • Edi Patterson as Wanda Whipple

Corrupt G.U.N. agents Mason (Kid Cudi) and Willoughby (Ellie Taylor) were seemingly sent to a random location. We don’t know where this is, but it could be another dimension.

Therefore, this is a chance that the villainous duo could return in some capacity. Meanwhile, The Buyer (Rory McCann) was seemingly crushed, so we doubt he’ll be back.

What could the plot of Knuckles season 2 be?

Knuckles wrapped up with a conclusive ending. The Echidna finally found his family and tribe with the Whipples and learned to let loose a bit more.

Meanwhile, Wade found his warrior spirit and managed to overcome his trauma with his father by beating him in a bowling competition. The friends then rode into the sunset, onto their next adventure.

Therefore, the next challenge that the pair could face would be something completely different. Perhaps it may delve into an adventure with the Master Emerald, or the mysteries of Angel Island – the home of Knuckles in the games.

The next movie may also set up another plot to be explored. Speaking of which…

Will Knuckles be in Sonic 3?

No trailer has yet been released for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. However, Idris Elba is listed as a cast member on IMDb, so we can assume he will appear.

This makes sense, as the movie is expected to be mainly based on the events of Sonic Adventure 2, which introduces the anti-hero, Shadow the Hedgehog (voice by Keanu Reeves in the upcoming film).

In Sonic Adventure 2, Knuckles shatters the Master Emerald when Eggman/Robotnik and Rouge the Bat attempt to steal it. He then searches for the scattered shards to piece it back together. Eventually, he follows Sonic and the rest of the gang into space to stop a diabolical plan that will end the world.

Rouge plays a big part in Knuckles’ story, but so far there’s no confirmation on whether she will appear in the movie. The same goes for Amy Rose, another key character in the game.

We also don’t know if Wade will make a cameo in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Considering he’s in the first two movies, we wouldn’t be surprised to see him appear in some capacity.

What other Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off shows could there be?

If Knuckles isn’t renewed for a second season, then never fear. The Sonic Team has big plans to create several spin-offs exploring the characters that feature in the movies.

In the same Paste article mentioned above, Ascher says the following: “…with Shadow coming into Sonic 3 and some of the bigger things that we want to do, the Sonic franchise on the movie side is going to be these Avengers-level events. They’re going to be these big, exciting stories that have a lot of different characters. And so what television did for us is it gave us time to go into some of the more supporting characters in depth and really build them out in cool ways.”

The current two main contenders for spin-off are Miles ‘Tails’ Prower, and Shadow the Hedgehog. However, if other characters (such as Amy and Rogue) are introduced in Sonic 3, then they could also get shows.

Other side characters could include favourites such as Agent Stone (Robotnik’s sidekick), and Rachel, Maddie’s straight-talking sister who had her wedding crashed by G.U.N agents.
