Roy Keane didn’t speak with Man Utd legend for over three years after he disrespected teammate, he almost fought him

Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane “didn’t say a word” to one Manchester United legend after he felt that one of his former teammates was deeply disrespected.

Roy Keane was a leading locker-room figure during his legendary spell at Old Trafford, with the Irishman forging a formidable legacy at the Red Devils.

The 52-year-old no-nonsense Irish hardman has been widely hailed for his magnificent leadership skills and exemplary captaincy at Manchester United.

Keane was a linchpin figure at the Premier League club, both on the field and off it, during his time under legendary former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former United star ascended to the captaincy after Eric Cantona’s sudden retirement in 1997 and Keane earned high admiration from his former teammates.

During his glittering spell under Sir Alex Ferguson, United legend Keane lifted seven Premier League titles, a Champions League and four FA Cups.

The ex-Red Devils skipper also captained the iconic United side that completed a famous continental treble during the 1998-99 season.

Keane ‘tried’ to fight Man Utd legend

Roy Keane played a key part in Manchester United’s iconic treble win, including his masterclass performance against Juventus in the Champions League semi-finals.

The former Nottingham Forest midfielder shared the pitch with a stacked roster of talented players from the treble team, including Andy Cole and Teddy Sheringham.

United legend Andy Cole has had a close relationship with Keane and candidly opened up about his admiration for the former Red Devils captain in the past.

However, the 52-year-old former United striker did not share the same love for ex-England teammate Teddy Sheringham when they were at Old Trafford.

Teddy Sheringham arrived at United in 1997 after he was snapped up from Tottenham, while Cole had previously been signed from Newcastle United in 1995.

Cole admitted that his rivalry with former England striker Sheringham hit boiling point during his fellow United legend’s debut season at Old Trafford.

The Premier League Hall of Famer revealed that Roy Keane came rushing to his defence and almost fought with Sheringham after his ex-teammate came after him.

“Teddy joined Manchester United, that season I remember conceding a goal,” Cole said, as per The Sun.

“He turned around to me and said, ‘That was your fault.’ My head was absolutely steaming then.

“I got into the dressing room and I lunged at him, I was just about to throw a punch. By the time I realised, Roy was trying to fight him.”

Sheringham reveals what Keane said to him

Sheringham and Cole were both an integral part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s treble-winning side, despite not getting along with one another at the time.

The two United legends have since mended their relationship and both Sheringham and Cole appeared at the recent premiere of Prime Video’s ‘99’ documentary series.

Sheringham revealed that Keane pulled no punches towards him after his incident with Cole and was even told to “f**k off” back to London.

The 58-year-old ex-United and Tottenham striker admitted that Keane “didn’t say a word” to him for over three years after the disrespect he showed to Cole.

Speaking on Keane, Sheringham said: “We had a fallout, Keaney turned around said, ‘Why don’t you f**k off back to London with your f*****g Ferrari and your penthouse?’

“And he turned around and grabbed my tie and everyone jumped in and stopped it, saying: ‘What’s happening, what’s happening?’

“He didn’t say a word to me. He didn’t say a word to me for the next three-and-a-half years.”
